In this article I would like to explain about GIGM – Gateway Import General Manifest by comparing with Import General Manifest.
IGM in export import trade means Import General Manifest, filed by carrier of goods once after arrival at destination customs location. However, if goods are moved to inland customs location, the consignee files customs clearance documents at such inland points. The said inland points can be a Container Freight Station (CFS), Inland Container Depot (ICD) or any other location in a customs bonded location.
Gateway IGM (GIGM) means, Import General Manifest filed by carried at base port on arrival of goods. For example, if cargo arrived at gateway port in Mumbai and said cargo is moved to Inland Container Depot (ICD) at New Delhi, the IGM filed at gateway port Mumbai is called Gateway IGM.
In some cases, two or more shipments meant for different customs locations in the country may arrive in one container at gateway port. In this case, the consol agent files necessary documents at gateway port and arrange to split out each shipment meant for each customs locations and arrange to send to respective destination customs locations by road or rail under customs supervision. Once after arriving cargo at each customs location, the respective consol agent files Import General Manifest at the said destination customs location. Importer or his customs house agent files necessary import documents to take delivery of goods. In this case, when filing IGM by consol, he needs to mention Gateway IGM details, as the said Gateway IGM details has to be matched with the IGM filed by carrier at load port.
