What is Airway bill and how MAWB works? How to differentiate MAWB and AWB?
I am copying below from my other article explaining about Airway bill in general terms.

What is the Airway bill and how does airway bill work? What is the difference between BL and AWB?

Airway bill is issued by air carrier of goods on receipt of goods after completion of export custoDifference between Airway bill and Master Airway Bill ms formalities of the country. Shipper obtains airway bill once after handing over cargo to them. Since the cargo reaches by air and transit time is too less compared to sea shipment, a set of airway bill is sent along with the cargo for immediate reference on transit and for import customs clearance at destination port by importer. Once after completion of customs formalities at load port customs location, cargo transfer manifest (CTM) issued by IATA agent along with airway bill and other required documents for transportation submits to air carriers. Original airway bills are issued in quintuplicate which is meant for carrier, importer, shipper and additional copies.

Once after arrival of cargo at destination, the importer or his cargo agent approaches the destination office of air carrier and collect airway bill and other required documents sent by shipper along with cargo for necessary documentation for import customs clearance procedures and other references. Importer may also collect copies of documents by courier or mail from shipper before arrival of goods. The shipper also can arrange to send airway bill and other documents through his bank to meet LC requirements or he desires. The major difference between bill of lading and Airway bill is that, Airway bill is not a document of title. However, airway bill can be prepared in such a way to treat as document of title and negotiable document.

The above explanation is applicable for both airway bill and master airway bill commonly required for a shipper as receipt of goods from the carrier.

Now let us know what is MAWB – Master Airway Bill?

I am copying below, about MAWB from my other article about Master airway bill.
MAWB is Master airway is issued by main carrier of goods on receipt of goods from a freight forwarder to deliver at destination as per agreed terms. HAWB means House airway bill issued by a freight forwarder on receipt of goods from shipper agreeing to deliver goods at destination.
A, a freight forwarder acts as a carrier legally accepts cargo from an exporter X agreeing to deliver cargo to Y at New York. A issues Airway bill to X on receipt of goods after necessary export customs formalities. A after receiving goods from X transfers goods to C who is a main carrier of goods. While transferring goods to C, A obtains an airway bill from main carrier C agreeing to deliver cargo at New York. Here, the airway bill issued by A to X is called house airway bill and the air way bill issued by C to A is called Master airway bill.

Are you clear about the difference between airway bill and master airway bill. Let me conclude the difference between MAWB and AWB as below:
Airway bill is a document, which is a proof of receipt of goods from shipper issued by air carrier. If a freight forwarder or consolidator involved in a shipment, such forwarder receives MAWB from owner of carrier or his agent as a proof of receipt of goods from such freight forwarder. In turn, said freight forwarder or consolidator issues a document of receipt of goods to his final shipper which is called HAWB house airway bill.

All Master Airway bills are airway bills. But all airway bills need not be Master airway bills.

I hope I could clarify, AWB Vs MAWB - How does airway bill work and how Master airway bill works and how to differentiate airway bill and master airway bill.
