Can a container number be amended in Import General Manifest?

 

In this article I would like to explain about the amendment of container number in Import General Manifest.

 

As you know, Import General Manifest filing with customs by carrier of goods is a legal requirement of Government of any country on arrival of goods or before arrival of goods at final customs location.

 

Amendment of container number in IGM is allowed subjected to certain parts of container numbers. As you know, a container number carries 10 alpha numerical numbers - Four alpha numbers at beginning followed by six numerical numbers.

 

Here the question is which part of such 10 alpha numerical number is allowed to amend IGM by Indian customs. Answer is as follows:

 

How to amend description of goods in Import General Manifest

Alphabetic test of first four letters and the last 10th test numerical are allowed to amend Import General Manifest.

 

If satisfies that there is no fraudulent intention on amendment of IGM, Customs department permits to amend Import General Manifest (IGM) subjected to payment of necessary fee along with the supporting documents.

 

The necessary application has to be filed with customs after paying requisite fee to emend Import General Manifest. In India, such amendments are carried out as per the guidelines of Section 30(3) of Indian Customs Act 1962.

cobus: I saw your write up on the web and found it very interesting. I have a question for you about importing to India What is the procedure in the following situation. A customer import product to India they receive the correct Commercial Invoice but the wrong container. They decide to keep the container. What steps do I follow to ensure that all the procedures are according to the requirements.
