Terms used in shipping
Percentage of total value of goods model:when a freight management firm agrees to haul merchandise for a predetermined percentage of the merchandise's costs.
Performance Claim - Claim made by the time charterer against a shipowner when the ship has been unable to achieve the speed agreed in the Charter-Party or has consumed too much fuel or both.
Performance Clause - Clause in a time Charter-Party which stipulates that, should the ship be unable to achieve the agreed speed or should she consume too much fuel, the charterer is entitled to recover from the shipowner the cost of time lost and extra fuel, normally by means of a deduction from hire money.
Performance Requirements - "Performance requirements" refers to government-mandated or -approved activities that investors must undertake, usually as a condition of establishment or operation in a particular country.
Perils of the Sea - It refers to the damage caused by heavy weather, stranding, striking on rocks or on bottom, contacts with floating agent, collision with other vessels, etc.
PERILS OF THE SEA: Fortuitous accidents or casualties peculiar to transportation on navigable water, such as sinking, collision of vessel, striking a submerged object, or encountering heavy weather or other unusual forces of nature.
Perils of the Sea:Those causes of loss for which the carrier is not legally liable. The elemental risks of ocean transport.
Period of Investigation - The period, usually 6 months, beginning at least 150 days before and continuing 30 days after the first day of the month when an antidumping petition is filed, during which an exporter's home market (or third country) and United States prices and other appropriate facts are investigated to determine whether sales to the United States have been at less than fair value. Pilferage - It is a petty theft, especially theft of articles in smaller quantities and not in package lots.
PILFERAGE:As used in marine insurance policies, the term denotes petty thievery-the taking of small parts of a shipment-as opposed to the theft of a whole shipment or large unit. Many ordinary marine insurance policies do not cover against pilferage, and when this coverage is desired it must be added to the policy.
PILOT HOUSE:The enclosed space on the navigating bridge from which a ship is controlled when under way.
