Terms used in shipping
pilot: A licensed navigational guide with thorough knowledge of a particular section of a waterway whose occupation is to steep ships along a coast or into and out of a harbor. Local pilots board the ship to advise the captain and navigator of local navigation conditions (difficult currents; hidden wrecks, etc.).
PILOT:A person who is qualified to assist the master of a ship to navigate when entering or leaving a port.
pilotage - Assisting the master of a ship in navigation when entering or leaving a port.
PILOTAGE DUES:A fee payable by the owner or operator of a ship for the services of a pilot. This fee is normally based on the ship’s tonnage.
PILOTAGE:The act carried out by a pilot of assisting the master of a ship in navigation when entering or leaving a port. Sometimes used to define the fee payable for the services of a pilot.

POD:Abbreviation for: - Port of Discharge. - Port of Destination. - Proof of Delivery. A document required from the carrier or driver for proper payment.

Point to Port Rate - Freight rate which includes all costs from inland place of the exporting country to the port of discharge in the importing country.
POINT:A particular city, town, village, or other community or area which is treated as a unit for the application of rates.
POL:Port of Loading (sometimes called Port of Origin). The port at which the goods are loaded onto the vessel.

These functions include ensuring infectious disease does not spread from vessels, enforcing controls on imported food and sampling shellfish beds for contamination.
Port Marks - It is an identifying set of letters, numbers and/or geometric symbols being followed by the name of the port of destination. These are placed on export shipments.Z
