Terms used in business

Direct selling offers many advantages to the customer, including lower prices and shopping from home. Potential disadvantages include the lack of after-sales service, an inability to inspect products prior to purchase, lack of specialist advice, and difficulties in returning or exchanging goods.

Directives - At an official level, directives are instructions, guidelines or orders issued by a governing or regulatory body. They may amount to law. In a less formal way a directive equates to an instruction issued by an executive or manager or organizational department.
Director - A person appointed to oversee and run a company or organisation along with other directors, In the entertainment industry, the person who directs the making of a film, TV program, etc.
Dirty Money - Money made from illegal activities which needs 'laundering' so that it appears to be legitimate.
Dirty price: the price of a debt instrument that includes the amount of accrued interest that has not yet been paid.
Disability Discrimination Act - An Act of Parliament passed in Britain in 1995 which promotes the civil rights of disabled people and protects them from discrimination in employment, education, renting property, access to transport, etc.
Disburse - To pay out money from a large fund, e.g. a treasury or public fund.
Disbursements - money that is paid out by a business.
Discount / Discount :This form of retailing, invented in the United States, consists mainly in selling at the lowest possible price. The low prices are achieved by reducing margins, making grouped purchases and cutting down overheads (the sales premises often resemble warehouses). This form of retailing has recently become very popular everywhere in the EU.

Discretionary Reserves - Balance sheet accounts that are used in some countries to temporarily store earnings from the current year or the recent past.
Discriminating Duty - A variable tax levied on goods depending from which country they were imported.
Discriminatory Pricing - The practice that selling a product or service at different prices that do not reflect a proportional difference in costs.
Disinvestment Receipts:The term refers to the money raised by the Government through disinvestment, or the sale of its equity stake in companies it owns.
Dispatch Note - Also called Dispatch Advice. A document giving details of goods which have been dispatched or are ready to be dispatched to a customer.
Dispute / Contentieux :Any dispute that is likely to be brought before a court. Any litigation falling within the competence of a court.

Dispute Settlement Understanding (DSU) - The Dispute Settlement Understanding (DSU) of the World Trade Organization (WTO) was one of the key outcomes of the Uruguay Round of multilateral trade negotiations.
Distributable Profit - A company's profits which are available for distribution among shareholders at the end of an accounting period.
Distributer - An individual or company who buys products, usually from manufacturers, and resells them to retail outlets or direct to customers. A wholesaler.
Distribution channel: All of the individuals and organizations involved in the process of moving products from producer to consumer. The route a product follows as it moves from the original grower, producer or importer to the ultimate consumer.
Distribution network / Réseau de distribution :Set of persons and companies involved in the distribution of a product, from the producer to the consumer.
Distributor / Distributeur :A person or an organisation that supplies goods to shops, etc. for a producer or manufacturer.
Distributor - Someone who sells directly for as supplier and maintains an inventory of goods for that seller.
