Registration to act as an Importer: Government registration is required to become an importer in the country to act as an importer. Foreign Trade government office of respective country is responsible to issue such authorization to become an importer. In India, IEC number (Import Export Code Number) is obtained from the office of Director General of Foreign Trade office to operate as an importer and exporter in India. Registration procedures to act as an importer are a onetime process, but renewal may be required as per the terms and conditions of such foreign trade office of a country. In most of the countries, the information on such registration for importer – exporter is linked with customs location and reserve bank, as process of imports and exports are online digitalized. No cylinder filled with any compressed gas shall be imported by air save with the previous sanction in each case of the director general of civil aviation. Import of 1) welded low carbon steel gas cylinders for low pressure liquefiable gas (sr. No's. 53, 54, 55 and 58 of appendix iii to schedule i of itc-hs) ; 2) refillable seamless steel gas cylinders; normalized steel cylinders; 3) refillable seamless quenched and tempered steel gas cylinders with tensile strngth less than 1100 mpa (112 kgf/mm2); 4) welded and seamless steel dissolved acetylene gas cylinders and 5) LPG containers for automotive use is subject to complianc with the mandatory quality standards (bis) as per import policy.
