DPU - Delivered at Place Unloaded (named location)
DPU means Delivered at Place Unloaded followed by a named location, under Inco Terms 2020. The exporters and importers may mention detailed named place under their Sale contract by mentioning the year of Incoterms version to avoid disputes on delivery of goods. Previous version of Inco terms (say Inco terms 2010, Incoterms 2000) also may be used, however the year of Incoterms need to be incorporated under Sale Agreement to avoid problems. Since ICC modifies all inco terms based on the practice of past EXIM trade experience on delivery terms, it is recommended to use latest version of Inco terms 2020 for contracting delivery terms to move goods.
The delivery term DPU can be used for the movement of goods by Air, Sea or Land, as ICC categorized DPU under Omni Model modes of Transport.
Under Inco Terms DPU, the seller is responsible for arranging carriage to deliver up to the named location unloaded. The seller’s obligation to bear the costs includes packing of goods, Pre carriage, Pre shipment inspection process if any, export documentation, handling process at load port, customs clearance at load port, main carriage, delivery at named location and unloading of cargo at named location specified. Once the goods unloaded at the named place, the risk transfers from Seller to Buyer. Any damages while unloading cargo at named location is the responsibility of the Seller. So the seller places the goods at the named Port, named Terminal or at the named place of location agreed mutually at the disposal of the buyer. The terminal could be a Warehouse, Container Yard, Quay, Rail or Air Terminal. Under DPU terms, risks and costs transfer from Seller to buyer when Seller delivers goods to the named place.
Under DPU terms, since the control over main carriage is with Seller, he is the in charge of carrier among buyer and seller.
Under DPU terms of delivery, the buyer depends the seller to get EGM (Export General Manifest) data. Click here to read about Ex-works, FOB,FCA,CPT,CIP,DAP,DPU,DDP,FAS,CFR and CIF under INCO TERMMS 2020
