Calculation of Chargeable weight

How to find Chargeable weight?

Air freight is calculated on the basis of per kilogram weight. However the chargeable weight is calculated on the basis of gross weight or volume weight whichever is higher.

If you are working for an Air cargo company, before going to quote for air freight, you need to get aware of the following things.,

  1. Air freight per kilogram to the particular port
  2. Gross weight of the cargo
  3. Volume of each package
  4. Volume weight
  5. Chargeable weight

How to find Volume Weight?

Volume weight =   Total cubic centimeter (cm3) of combined parcel  /  6000      or

                            =  Total cubic meter (m3) of combined parcel  /  0.006

Q. Find the chargeable weight for a consignment consist of 3 parcels with the following measurements,

Parcel 1 with length 32cm, width 44cm, and height 40cm

Parcel 2 with length 55cm, width 30cm, and height 25cm

Parcel 3 with length 60cm, width 35cm, and Height 50cm

Gross weight is 60 kg

Solution:

1st parcel

Length = 32cm,

Width = 44cm, and

Height = 40 cm

Volume weight = L*w*h/6000

                            =32*44*40/6000

                            =56320/6000

                             =9.39 kg

2nd parcel

Length = 55cm,

Width = 30cm, and

Height = 25 cm

Volume weight = L*w*h/6000

                            =55*30*25

                            =41250/6000

                            =6.875 kg

3rd parcel

Length = 60cm,

Width = 35cm, and

Height = 50 cm

Volume weight = L*w*h/6000

                            =60*35*50

                            =105000/6000

                            =17.5 kg

Total Volume weight by combining 3 parcels,

                    =9.39+6.875+17.5

                   =33.765

                    =34 kg

The chargeable weight is calculated on the basis of gross weight or volume weight whichever is higher. Here Gross weight is higher when compared to Volume weight (60 > 34), so

Chargeable weight=50kg
