Terms used in freight forwarding
PALLET JACK: A hand-operated jack for lifting and moving freight that is on skids
Pallet Rack: A single or multi-level structural storage system that is utilized to support high stacking of single items or palletized loads.
Pallet :A wooden frame on which pieces of general cargo are placed so they can be lifted using a forklift truck.
Pallet: The platform which cartons are stacked on and then used for shipment or movement as a group. Pallets may be made of wood or composite materials. Some pallets have electronic tracking tags (RFID) and most are recycled in some manner.
PALLET: Airline equipment, a flat metal platform, on which goods are assembled and secured by nets and straps, also referred to as a cookie sheet!
PALLET:A low portable platform, usually wooden, on which cargo is stacked for storage or transportation; a skid.
Pallet:A platform (usually two-deck), with or without sides, on which a number of packages or pieces may be loaded to facilitate handling by a lift-truck.
Pallet:A platform on which goods can be stacked in order to facilitate the movement by a fork lift or sling.
Palletized Cargo:Cargo that is placed on portable platforms for easier loading/unloading or transportation. Platforms are called pallets.
Panamax Size:The maximum measurements and dimensions of a vessel capable to pass the Panama Canal.
Panamax:maximum beam that allows vessels to pass through the locks of the Panama Canal (specifically used for dry bulk and container vessels). The type of vessels, which have the dimensions that allows vessels to pass through the locks of the Panama Canal.
PAPS Pre Arrival Processing System – system used ex. Canada for clearing freight through US Customs at the border.
Particular Average- In marine insurance, a partial loss or damage, caused by an insured peril and which is not a general average loss.
Payee:see Bill of Exchange
Payload:The revenue-producing load carried by a means of transport.
Payment Against Documents:Instructions given by a seller to a bank to the effect that the buyer may collect the documents necessary to obtain delivery of the goods only upon actual payment of the invoice.
Payment Terms:Found on the bill of lading or delivery receipt, payment terms specify the party that is responsible for payment and when payment is due.
PCS: Panama Canal Surcharge is the fee that is applied to your cargo to help defer the cost of transiting the Panama Canal
PD :Port dues
PD: Privileged Domestic. Merchandise in a Free Zone that is not subject to duty or duty has been paid
Per Diem - A charge, based on a fixed daily rate.
Per Diem - Costs per day. Charge on containers held by customers for an extended time; charges levied upon a trucker due to late return of equipment.
Perfect Order: The definition of a perfect order is one which meets all of the following criteria: Delivered complete, with all items on the order in the quantity requested. Delivered on time to customer’s request date, using the customer’s definition of on-time delivery. Delivered with complete and accurate documentation supporting the order, including packing slips, bills of lading, and invoices. Delivered in perfect condition with the correct configuration, customer ready, without damage, and faultlessly in- stalled (as applicable).
PERILS OF THE SEA:Fortuitous accidents or casualties, peculiar to transportation on a navigable water, such as stranding, sinking, collision of the vessel, striking a submerged object, or encountering heavy weather or other unusual forces of nature.
Perishable Cargo:Cargo subject to decay or deterioration, normally fresh food and vegetables, etc.
Perishable:Products that require expedited transport or special attention to prevent spoilage or decay such as fruits, vegetables, frozen fish or certain chemical products.
Personal Effects - Goods being imported or exported which are the personal belonging of an individual. To qualify for personal effects status at import into the UK, goods much be in the ownership and use of the importer for at least six months, prior to departing for the UK.
PHYSICAL DISTRIBUTION:The flow of materials from the end of the assembly line to the customer.
Phytosanitary Cert. :Phyto means plants. Under WTO treaty, a competent government authority can issue a certificate based on inspection of goods confirming that a plant, seeds, or plant products are free of insects and disease which the destination country specifies.
Phytosanitary Certificate:A document issued by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, for exports from Australia of plants or plant products.
PHYTOSANITARY INSPECTION CERTIFICATE:A certificate, issued by the US Department of Agriculture to satisfy import regulations for foreign countries, indicating that a US shipment has been inspected and is free from harmful pests and plant diseases.
Phytosanitary Inspection Certificates:Also referred to as "plant health" certificates, these are required by many foreign countries for shipments of plants and plant products. They serve to certify conformity to local plant quarantine import regulation with respect to pest and disease infection.
Pick Up Service:Retrieving goods from a shipper to be brought to their destination for a fee.
Pick/Pack: Picking of product from inventory and packing into shipment containers.
Picking: The operations involved in pulling products from storage areas to complete a customer order.
Pickup and Delivery (Cartage):local hauling of freight. Often the trucking service used for transferring freight from the shipper to a terminal, or from a terminal to a consignee.
Pickup and Delivery (P&D): A type of transportation, usually local, where the carrier follows a regular route making deliveries and picking up shipment.
Pick-Up Order: document indicating the authority to pick up cargo or equipment from a specific location.

PIER: Structure at which ships can berth, built at right angles to the shore
Pier:That part of a wharf which is intended for the mooring of vessels.
Pilferage - The act of stealing cargo.
