The National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) is an independent non-profit institution committed to assisting the government, civil society and the private sector to make informed policy choices. NCAER’s research priorities include rural development, household behaviour, growth, trade, and economic management.
NCAER is India’s oldest and largest economic think tank. It is also one of a handful of think-tanks in the world that combine rigorous analysis and policy outreach with deep data collection capabilities, particularly for large scale household surveys. NCAER deploys cutting-edge research methodologies and uniquely focused and timely data to address policy design and implementation.
NCAER has done pioneering research work in applied economics, with an emphasis on policy analysis and application of modern quantitative techniques to development issues, regional development and planning, household income, consumption, savings and investment, and energy. It conducts contract research for government, the private sector and the non-government sector at the national and international levels. Its activities include developing policy reports, tracking and assessing key sectors of the economy, preparing economic forecasts; and supporting decision-making and disseminating research findings. NCAER is also uniquely qualified in India for designing and executing large-scale sample surveys on regional and human development as well as a large range of consumer products. It has built up a rich database on economic and commercial data.
