Subliminal Advertising - An illegal form of advertising. An image which is flashed onto a screen, usually for about one second, or a message played at low volume, that can influence the person watching or listening but they are not aware of what they have seen and/or heard.

 

Subordinate - Someone who is lower in rank than another person, and is subject to the authority of a manager, etc. Less important.

 

Subpart F Income - In the U.S. tax code, income from foreign subsidiaries owned more than 10 percent and controlled foreign corporations that is taxed on a pro rata basis as it is earned.

 

Subpoena - An official summons which requires a witness to attend a court case and testify at a specific time and place. Failure to do so may result in them being punished for contempt of court.

 

Subrogation / Subrogation :Legal mechanism by which the Credit Insurer, having indemnified the exporter, holds the exporters rights and shares and can rightfully exercise them against the debtor.

 

Subrogation - The right of an insurer, who has paid out a claim to an injured party, to sue the person, company, etc., who caused the injury.

 

Subscriber - The person, firm, company or corporation, or other entity, having a communications requirement of its own that is responsible for payment of charges and for compliance with this schedule.

 

Subsidiary / Filiale :A firm placed under the direction of a parent company which holds the majority of its shares. As a legally independent entity, the subsidiary enjoys management autonomy.

 

Subsidiary - A firm controlled by another firm (called the parent) through the ownership of greater than 50 percent of its voting stock.

 

Subsidized Financing - Financing that is provided by a host government and that is issued at a below-market interest rate.

 

Subsidy - Monetary assistance granted by the government to an individual or other entity in support of an activity that is regarded as being in the public interest.

 

Subsistence Agriculture - Small-scale agriculture designed to meet the consumption needs of individual households.

Succession Planning - The process of identifying suitable employees who can be trained and prepared to replace senior staff when their positions become vacant.

Sunk Cost - A company's past expenditures which cannot be recovered, and should not be taken into account when planning future projects.

 

Sunset Provision - Also called Sunset Clause. A provision which states that a particular law or regulation will expire on a certain date unless further action is taken to extend it.

Supply And Demand - Supply is the amount of a product or service which is available, and demand is the amount which people wish to buy. When demand is higher than supply prices usually rise, when demand is less than supply prices usually fall.

 

Supply Chain - A chain through which a product passes from raw materials to manufacturing, distribution, retailing, etc., until it reaches the end consumer.

 

SURETY BONDS: Surety bonds provide reimbursement to an individual, company or the government if a firm fails to complete a contract. SBA guarantees surety bonds in a program much like SBA's guaranteed loan program.

Surrender Value: The amount of money paid by the insurer to the insured in consideration latter’s surrendering the policy to the former is known as surrender-value. This value is assessed if the policyholder wants to discontinue his policy after premiums have been paid for three consecutive years. It is less than the premiums already paid.

Sweatshop - A place, often a clothing factory, where people work long hours in poor conditions for low wages.

 

SWEEP ACCOUNT:A brokerage or bank account whose cash balance is automatically transferred into an interest-bearing investment, such as a money market fund. Use sweep accounts to earn interest on surplus cash. At the end of each business day, a sweep account would transfer excess funds into an interest-bearing account, earn overnight interest, and make the funds available the next day.

 

Sweetheart Deal - An agreement or contract which offers very favourable deals to one or both parties, but is often not in the best interest of others, such as shareholders.
