CITES Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species is an international agreement between governments. The aim of CITES is to protect wild animals and plants by ensuring international trade in does not threaten their survival. CITES ensures that international trade does not threaten species with extinction, protecting about 5,000 species of animals and 30,000 species of plants. All imports and exports of wild animals and plants are permitted with such certification. All imports and exports of wild animals and plants are in compliance with the provisions of Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species and the concerned officer of Wildlife Preservation at import/export customs location has to inspect and certify by endorsing on relevant CITES export/import permit. In India, shipping of wildlife animals and wildlife plants are allowed are restricted through some of the ports like Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai, Cochin, Amritsar and Tuticorin only.
