How to get permission from Indian customs authorities to take delivery of imported goods from Italy?

The importer or his customs broker files necessary documents with Indian customs authorities to complete import customs clearance process.  The necessary inspection, assessment of goods is carried out by destination port Indian customs authorities if applicable.  Once India customs authorities satisfy with the required formalities, grants their permission to take delivery of goods.  The customs authorities of destination port of India permit importer to take delivery of goods only after payment of import duties if applicable to pay.

 

How to get permission from carrier of goods to take delivery of imported goods?

 

An imported cargo arrived in Indian port from Italy port can be taken delivery only after obtaining necessary permit from custom authorities of imported country, carrier of goods in India and custodian of cargo in India.

 

The importer or his customs agent in India can approach carrier of imported goods for permission to take delivery of imported goods arrived at destination customs location in India.  Such permit is commonly called Delivery Order.  If consolidation is involved in this import from Italy, the importer or his agent has to get permission from consolidator of goods also at destination port location in India.  Usually, a freight carrier of goods at destination port release delivery order to consignee only after collecting their dues if any.

After completion of import customs clearance procedures and formalities in India and after obtaining necessary Delivery Order from carrier of goods, the importer or his agent can approach custodian of imported cargo to take delivery or goods at destination customs location in India where cargo kept under custody.  The custodian is the party who handles goods at customs location by providing space and equipment to handle goods.   The custodian of cargo at destination port of India delivers imported goods to importer or his agent after collecting their service charges.
